I thought the whole “we’re gonna use AI to write shows and movies and pay you garbage wages to fix the scripts” was vile, but “we want to scan background actors and then OWN THEIR LIKENESS TO USE IN PERPETUITY DESPITE PAYING THEM FOR ONLY A SINGLE DAY’S WORK” is just…

I don’t have words for this. There are no words that capture the sheer revulsion I felt at reading that actual, real fucking offer from the AMPTP.

buckyhoney:

if you actively write and or consume content on this app (or any other plateform) and it involves a fictional character(s) you enjoy, you should be in support of the writers & actors strike.

those characters would be NOTHING, without those writers and the actors that play them

Posts that would be found on the Sunnydale High meme account, in roughly chronological order:

A parent is playing with a small child in a swimming pool. The parent is labelled "Mr. Giles" and the child "Buffy Summers and her weird friend group". Nearby, completely ignored by the parent, another child is struggling to keep their head above water. This child at risk of drowning is labelled, "Me, trying to borrow a book".ALT
A teenager is chased down a school hallway by a levitating, human shaped silhouette. The teenager is labelled "the entire student body" and the silhouette "whatever new horror awaits us this week".ALT
Same meme template as the previous, except this time "the entire student body" is being chased by "Principal Snyder".ALT
All caps black text against a white background. Reads, "Do not drink the lemonade at parent-teacher night I think they forgot sugar".ALT
Header reads, "My entire class watching Ms. Calendar openly flirt with the librarian in the classroom doorway". Below are two frames in which a person (it's T'Pol from Star Trek Enterprise) looks at something, and then looks away and sips tea.ALT
Uno card that reads, "Acknowledge that you joined a cult and tried to burn three of my classmates at the stake last week or draw 25". A person labelled "my parents" is shown holding a massive number of uno cards, contemplating their next move and also probably their life choices.ALT
Puppet monkey looks at something to their side, and then looks away, staring straight ahead with a haunted expression. Heading text reads, "Me in comp sci, trying to act like I didn't see a leather-clad Willow Rosenberg hold everyone at the Bronze hostage last night".ALT
Heading text reads, "Happy graduation, everybody!" Image below is a young child looking at the camera with an evil smile on their face while a building burns in the background.ALT

The Best News of Last Week

1. Arizona governor Ok’s over the counter birth control

image

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) has expanded access to over-the-counter birth control that will “soon be available to Arizonans,” according to a press release.

Arizonans 18 and older will soon be able to go to their local pharmacy and purchase oral contraceptives without a doctor’s prescription.

2. ‘Great news’: EU hails discovery of massive phosphate rock deposit in Norway

image

A massive underground deposit of high-grade phosphate rock in Norway, pitched as the world’s largest, is big enough to satisfy world demand for fertilisers, solar panels and electric car batteries over the next 50 years, according to the company exploiting the resource. About 90% of the world’s mined phosphate rock is used in agriculture for the production of phosphorous for the fertiliser industry, for which there is currently no substitute.

3. U.S. Is Destroying the Last of Its Once-Vast Chemical Weapons Arsenal

6. No Longer Endangered: The Bald Eagle is an Icon of the ESA

image

When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was enacted in 1973, bald eagle population numbers across the country showed that the species was close to disappearing. Before the ESA, in the 1950s and ‘60s, eagles were shot routinely despite the protection. The ESA listing helped bring public attention to the issue.

Through the early 1970s and into the early ‘80s, numbers increased gradually. Then, as you got into the ‘90s, there was still gradual growth. From the late ‘90s into the 2000s, the population really exploded. There was a doubling rate of every several years or so for a while.

7. Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon drops 34% in first half 2023

image

Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon fell 34% in the first half of 2023, preliminary government data showed on Thursday, hitting its lowest level in four years as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva institutes tougher environmental policies.

Data produced by Brazil’s national space research agency Inpe indicated that 2,649 square km (1,023 square miles) of rainforest were cleared in the region in the half year, the lowest for the period since 2019.

I have a bit of concern that in @staff’s posts and statements they keep talking about “smaller content creators” and so forth. Small? Hm?

I can’t speak for anyone on Tumblr except myself, but I am definitely not here to be a “content creator” or “Influencer” of any stripe the way those words are defined on other socials. I have no desire to or garner thousands of followers and likes on every post. I’m not here to create a brand or a name. I’m not about numbers. I pretty deliberately keep my ‘following’ count relatively small so I can actually try to read what people post.

I’m just a geek who wants to talk about geek interests with others who share them, perhaps talk about life, and look at cute and funny comics sometimes, much the same way I did in the aughts when blogging was honestly more of a personal interest endeavor than a slickly orchestrated attempt to become known and get endorsements. Much the same way people did in the late 90s where they put up Geocities pages with ten photos low-res scanned from magazines of whatever actor or fictional character they were into, amid a tinny MIDI sound clip and eye-straining pink backgrounds.

If I wanted to be on Reddit, Twitter or Insta I would be there. I am on Tumblr in part because it is not like those sites.

You want to make the site more user friendly so people can find their fandom brethren or other users they’d like to follow? Fix the search. Fix. The. Search. Make the settings console more user friendly so I don’t have to Google how to find every single thing.

The push to collapse reblogs, though, not only impedes conversation but it sounds as though it is going to make it a hell of a lot harder to curate one’s space here, as well as making it harder for self-care/curation tools like TumblrSavior to work. That’s not user friendly.

Turning the site into a poor clone of other socials is not going to help it. Really.

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we’re using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience.

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content.

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

  1. Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
  2. Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
  3. Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
  4. Retain and grow our creator base.
  5. Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
  6. Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Hi folks! We’re surprised to see how many of you think we’re getting rid of the reverse-chronological dashboard or pivoting to a solely algorithmic feed. We’re not! We can see how you might have come to that conclusion, so let us reassure you and clear some things up.

We have a ton of options and toggles to customize your experience. Want a reverse-chronological dashboard feed? No problem! The chronological feed is not going anywhere. Just toggle off “Best Stuff First” in your dashboard settings and scroll away. Want to see more art or fanfic of your favorite movie or show? Follow some tags and you’ll find additional posts and new blogs to follow. We’ve had an algorithm for years—we just don’t make you use it if you don’t want to.

Tumblr is a place where you can tailor and customize your experience to individual preferences. With this core product strategy as guidance, we’ll keep improving Tumblr for new and existing users alike.

HEY. @staff LISTEN TO US. LISTEN TO YOUR LOYAL USERS. DO. NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT GIVE THIS SITE AN ALGORITHM.

the whole reason I use this site is because it DOESNT have one. PLEASE. I swear you will lose half your user base if not more.

I will absolutely leave if they do use an algorithm. I’m here because there is not one. This is my ONLY social media.

Things today’s taught me:

  1. Download fics you really like because you never know when you’ll need them
  2. Support and donate to sites you use a lot (ao3 is a knee-jerk reach daily for me and basically the whole internet and I will be donating to them next time that season rolls around as I hope many others are)
  3. Ao3 volunteers are under appreciated without question for all they do for this site

Please show the site some love once it’s back up and thank the vols too
